Back from Ohio LinuxFest

I’m back from my first ever Ohio LinuxFest and I’m happy to report I had a great time. Like other community events I’ve attended, one of the best parts about the show was the people you meet/catch up with. Linux podcasters were particularly well represented, but the crowd in general was fantastic. The event is definitely one I’ll attend next year.

Off to the Ohio LinuxFest

As mentioned on the podcast (the ogg rss feed is in your favorite podcatcher, right?) I decided to drive and in about an hour I’ll be off to the Ohio LinuxFest. I should arrive just in time for the FARK.com/Ohio LinuxFest “pre-party”. If you’ll be in Columbus and would like to chat, let me know.

LinuxWorld UK Postponed

(via Dave) It looks like LinuxWorld UK has been postponed:

It is with regret that we must announce that LinuxWorld Conference & Expo 2007 has been postponed until spring 2008.

We have reached this decision following feedback from potential sponsors and exhibitors who feel that the event is too close to the Linux Kernel Summit. By delaying the show, we will be able to ensure that the content and programme are a true reflection of the needs of the Linux and Open Source communities.

We hope to be in touch shortly with new dates.

I was really looking forward to going to London in October, so am a bit disappointed by the news. Citing crossover with the Linux Kernel Summit does seem a bit odd, as Dave points out. I’m seeing if I can get any additional information now.

Community Involvement

At LinuxQuestions.org, community feedback is absolutely critical to us. On that note, I’m happy to announce the LQ Project Tools, which will allow us to monitor community feedback, bug reports and feature requests in a much better way than we have in the past. If you have a suggestion on a project you’d like to see us undertake, have found a bug or have a feature suggestion, please let us know. We really do listen.

LQ Code Upgrade

I’m happy to announce that after a slight delay, we’ve rolled out the most recent code upgrade to LinuxQuestions.org. You won’t see a huge difference at the site as the main layout remains unchanged. You should notice some performance and usability improvements, nice new features and more ajax sprinkled throughout (using the YUI library). A lot of what you can’t see, however, is behind the scenes. Some common items are now a bit easier for mods and this code base gives us a flexible framework to move forward with some other functionality we’d like to implement. Stay tuned. Thanks once again goes to David for his continued help at LQ.

Off to LinuxWorld

Just about ready to leave for the LinuxWorld Conference and Expo in San Francisco. If you’re attending the Expo be sure to stop by the .org Pavilion and say hello. In addition to exhibiting I’ll be participating in the “Ask the Experts” Q&A session and will help in selecting the 2007 Product Excellence Awards. See you in San Fran.

Update: Free Ubuntu Live Conference Pass

A follow up to this post. I’m happy to announce that a winner has been selected and Benanzo will be receiving a gratis pass to Ubuntu Live via O’Reilly Media compliments of LinuxQuestions.org. A big thanks to O’Reilly for allowing us to do this. See you in Portland.

Hello MediaTemple (mt)?

My apologies to all blog readers for the recent performance issues. This site is currently hosted by a MediaTemple (gs) GridServer account. The performance has been nothing short of horrific. It’s a shame – (mt) clearly has some really smart people and the (gs) product looks really compelling from a technical standpoint. I like the idea of having my blog off the main LQ infrastructure for a variety of reasons, including the fact that if there is a problem with the main LQ colo I can post updates to my blog. With the state of the current setup, some blog posts have been taking literally hours and dozens of attempts to post. In the last two days, multiple posts have simply been completely lost. A simple ‘ls’ sometimes takes 10-15 seconds. I’d highly suggest to (mt) that they stop accepting new customers until they can fix the current issues, but in the mean time I’ll be looking for a different provider. Thanks for sticking with me in the mean time.

UPDATE: MediaTemple has been beta testing a new storage model that they think will vastly improve performance. They’ve been kind enough to offer to move me to that ASAP. Maybe I won’t have to move the blog after all. Stay tuned. BTW, kudos to (mt) for having a sysadmin start answering my tickets as opposed to a Customer Support Agent.

Linux Foundation Collaboration Summit

I’ve finally booked the trip to Mountain View for the Linux Foundation Collaboration Summit. I’ll be getting in on Tuesday night and will be staying at the Wild Palms Hotel, if anyone wants to meet for a drink/chat. It looks like quite a few attendees are staying at the Wild Palms, so it should be interesting. Really looking forward to the summit.
