I'm Back

Just a quick update to let you know that my blogging frequency should return to previous levels moving forward. Additionally, I just booked my flight to SCALE 7X. SCALE is one of my favourite conferences, and if you’re able to attend I highly recommend it. LQ is once again a proud sponsor.

LinuxWorld Expands To OpenSource World Conference & Expo

The LinuxWorld announcement mentioned in this post has officially been released. From an email I got last night:

As a valued member of our LinuxWorld conference speaker community, we wanted you to be among the first to hear of the launch of OpenSource World Conference & Expo, a new event that will focus on open source software and all things Linux. Appended below is a press release that will cross the wire tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. announcing this transition; until that time we request that you do not disseminate this information.

OpenSource World will include the key features of LinuxWorld, but will offer a strong focus on supporting and enlarging not only the Linux market, but the overarching open source technology umbrella. OpenSource World is scheduled to take place August 10-13, 2009, at San Francisco’s Moscone Center.

For more information, visit the OpenSource World website at www.opensourceworld.com.

Despite the success of smaller community events, I think there’s still a place for Linux^W OpenSource World and am glad to see IDG putting renewed effort into the event. To be honest, the show has been about more than just “Linux” for a long time now anyway.

Random LQ Stats – Browser Update

I like to post random LQ stats every once and a while, and with the recent release of Firefox 3, now seems like a good time for a browser update. Here are the stats for July:

Firefox 66.05%
Internet Explorer 20.86%
Mozilla 4.98%
Opera 4.28%
Safari 2.07%
Konqueror 1.59%

Now, breaking down the Firefox numbers:

3.0 56.52%
2.0.0.14 18.02%
2.0.0.15 12.66%
2.0.0.6 1.59%
1.5.0.12 1.37%
2.0.0.11 1.34%

I have to admit that I’m a bit surprised, but quite impressed with the uptake up Firefox 3. To have well over 50% of the Firefox market share that rapidly is a remarkable feat. If they’d just fix the CSS overflow bug that makes LQ code tags scroll horizontally, it’d be even better ;)

Linux Magazine is dead, long live Linux Magazine

I hadn’t seen it posted anywhere, but it is now public. InfoStrada will no longer be publishing a print version of Linux Magazine. Linux Pro Magazine, which is known as Linux Magazine outside the USA, will be acquiring some of the print assets. The US-based Linux Magazine will continue operating as a web-only property at http://linux-mag.com/. I’ve been the “Tech Support” columnist for Linux Magazine since 2003 and will continue to write for the online presence. You can view the online archive of my columns at LQ.

LinuxQuestions.org Turns 8

It was on June 25, 2000 that I made the very first post at LQ, introducing it to the world. Fast forward eight years and we have almost 3,200,000 posts and over 350,000 registered members. I don’t think the raw numbers tell the real story though. It continues to amaze me just how far the site has come. Despite our constantly growing size we remain one of the friendlier community sites on the web and much of the original feel and spirit of the site remain. That being said, there is always room for improvement. We’re going to refocus and redouble our efforts. Our commitment to our members remains as strong as ever. We’re currently looking for feedback on what we’re doing well and how we can improve. No one knows the site better than you, and we want to know what you think. I have to admit I feel a bit rejuvenated and am really looking forward to see how we can improve the site. I’d like to take this time to thank each and every LQ member. Without you, we’d be nothing. A special thanks goes out to the mod team, who’s dedication has allowed us to not only grow, but flourish…for eight years and counting.

/back

The travel madness that was April is mostly behind me now and both blogging and podcasting should return to their previous frequencies. Thanks for the patience.

Sidenote: I think I liked the posting interface in WP pre-2.5 much better, but maybe I just need to get acclimated to the new look.

Lug Radio Live and MySQL Expo

I’ve been traveling quite a bit recently so have not been able to blog nearly as much as I’d like. I expect that to continue through most of April, but I’ll do my best to blog more than I have been. Things should calm down a bit starting in May. If you’ll be attending Lug Radio Live in San Francisco or the MySQL Expo in Santa Clara next week and would like to connect, let me know. I had planned to attend the Linux Foundation Collaboration Summit this week but had to change plans at the last minute. The event was great last year and I was really looking to attend it again. Hopefully next year. Lastly, quite a few people have pinged my about the podcast. I had planned to do one yesterday, but it didn’t happen. I now plan to do one on the 10th. Stay tuned… and thanks for the patience.

Open Source Business Conference

I’ll be in San Francisco for the next few days to attend the Open Source Business Conference. I was considering attending the Microsoft “Open Source ISV Forum”, but it seems they declined my application to attend :) If you’ll be in the area and would like to meet up, drop me a line.

Gratis 2008 MySQL Conference & Expo Conference Pass

I recently mentioned that LQ will be sponsoring a number of upcoming Linux and Open Source related conferences. I’m extremely happy to report that we are now able to give away a completely free conference pass to some of them. The first one is the 2008 MySQL Conference & Expo, which is a $1,199.00 value. To be eligible, simply post in this thread explaining how you work with MySQL or how you’re involved in the MySQL community along with why you’d like to attend the event. We’ll randomly select a winner from the eligible entries. We only have a single pass to give away, so please make sure you are able to attend the event before entering. Thanks, and good luck.

Note: We also have some gratis LugRadio Live USA 2008 tickets available. See my previous post if you’re interested.
